Companies commonly plan website launches without involving writers in the planning phase, and typically plunk them in afterward to replace placeholder text with actual content.

The challenge for writers is to create compelling content within predefined fields and other design restrictions that oftentimes are not ideal to copy flow.

Adding to this challenge, when designers make changes to a website, a writer must have holistic knowledge of a website’s contents in order to know when a change affects content in any other area of a website. And a writer must be adaptable to affect changes quickly, whether creating a new product description or re-writing an entire website section.

In tandem with website changes and launches, I’ve written a lot of website collateral material, including press releases, employee and stakeholder communications, and client communications. I’ve also written internal and external communications for service migrations, service interruptions and other sensitive communications where a careful attention to the right wording is paramount to brand perception with customers, stakeholders and the media.
